In cooperation with the Rotterdam Municipal Authorities, Maarsen Groep selected the architect for one of their most prestigious projects so far. In the wake of an ambitious competition, the ageless and dynamic design and the intricate coherence of functions proved decisive in selecting de Architecten Cie.
An impressive urban redevelopment project is emerging at Weena, right across from the imposing entrance of the renewed Rotterdam Central Station. In the near future, this location will be the first impression of the city for approximately 300,000 visitors each day.
The existing Weenapoint office block will be demolished in part, after which it will be replaced by new construction with alively and varied set-up. Apartments, a brasserie, a hotel, and vibrant Mixone functions are added to the plinth course in order to further improve the quality of this inner city district. Additional office and conference space will be realised, partially on behalf of a number of current tenants.
A wealth of facilities is already present in the immediate vicinity of Weenapoint, including hotels, restaurants, shops, and theatres. Construction of underground infrastructure and parking facilities in Kruisplein car park will result in a low-traffic entrance to Weenapoint. Adding to the Rotterdam Municipality investments in public space and the new Central Station, this is to be the new city gateway to Rotterdam.
Redevelopment is implemented along a phased trajectory, allowing tenants of existing structures to move seamlessly to the newly constructed sections. Completion of the initial phase is scheduled for mid-2014. The Weenapoint location will be the most eye-catching element of the new Rotterdam Central District.
